Find Your Perfect Board - Cheese & Honey

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jenness Gough, Founder of Cheese & Honey, located in San Antonio, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Cheese & Honey creates artfully curated charcuterie boards for any event or occasion, from a night in for one, a flight across the country, a boat ride on the lake with friends, corporate gifts, a dinner party, or an event with a grazing table for hundreds.

Tell us about yourself

I started my business after creating boards for friends and family for different occasions and was convinced to start a business. I originally started with no real plan but an Instagram account and grew Cheese & Honey from there. Each day I wake up excited to curate beautiful boards for any and all occasions for customers. I am inspired by things I see every day when walking around town, shopping, dining out, shopping on the internet, and traveling.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner to date is getting the 3rd Best Charcuterie Board in San Antonio in the San Antonio Current. Being a charcuterie board-only business behind two award-winning restaurants is a HUGE accomplishment for a 2.5-year-old business! Another big accomplishment was leaving my full-time job to take the risk of working for myself and growing my business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is how lonely it can be at times. When starting a small business, you are alone the majority of the time, so it is important to get out, network, meet with mentors, be around your support system, and remember that as you grow, the loneliness will start to go away.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My top 3 tips I would give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business would be the following:

  1. Have a plan, not just any plan but take time to create a business plan!
  2. Surround yourself with supportive family, friends, and mentors.
  3. Know that it is okay to fail. Get back up and try again!
