Weightless Float Center - Chelsea Powers

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chelsea Powers, Co-Owner of Weightless Float Center, located in Louisville, KY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Weightless Float Center is a modern-day spa unlike any other. We offer flotation therapy (a.k.a. floating/sensory deprivation), dry steam and infrared sauna, cold plunge, and massage. Weightless was an idea born out of a want for a space to relax, be inspired, and reflect. Where every guest knows they are in a safe space that's made for them and that they are free to unwind and disconnect from life's daily grind. At Weightless, we jokingly say, "check-in or check out." Sometimes you just need a moment. Some people sleep. Some people meditate. Some people drift listlessly through thoughts, while others take the opportunity to stretch and enjoy the buoyancy of the float solution— it feels great to have no weight on your joints and your bones. The ol' power-down power-up does wonders for your brain-body connection.

Tell us about yourself

I've spent a lot of my career before Weightless in the spa and beauty industry. I was lucky enough to work in some of the best spas in the country. When moving back to Louisville, I realized there weren't many options for people to enjoy a night out that didn't involve bourbon or gambling. I think this city loves to party but needed a place for people to rest and recharge. Toxins in, toxins out!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Anyone can start a business, but no one will tell you how to run it. It took a while to gain the confidence that's needed to stand behind a unique business such as this and take ownership of it. As women, I think we are groomed to be resistant to boasting and being proud of our work. It took me a while, but entrepreneurship forced me to lead with confidence.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The inability to ever truly clock out. There is always a lingering sense of worry when away from space, despite things running smoothly. There are enormous highs and super lows, but I think the highs make it all worth it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Be cautious with frivolous spending in the beginning. Have appropriate funds for contingencies. Things happen and having money saved for emergencies is an absolute must. Lastly, get a good CPA and don't get behind on taxes.
