What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm an Accredited Financial Counsellor, and I help couples to gain clarity, confidence, and control over their finances. And I help couples to go from financial fights to financial teamwork.
Tell us about yourself
I started out my adult life as a Mechanical Engineer (hence the name of my business!). This career was not for me and I was always pondering what I would rather do with my life. Also, I've been divorced. My first husband and I, our biggest struggle was to get along in our finances. We just saw money very differently. I tried to find us help to get on the same page but it didn't seem to be available. So when I came across the idea of Financial Counselling, I really understood the need for it and knew that's what I wanted to do.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I've built everything myself, from scratch: my logo, my website, my social media....everything. (After all I'm a Financial Counsellor and a little bit cheap! Haha!)
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Self Doubt. Starting a business is an emotional rollercoaster. The more you can expect and plan for the lows, the better prepared you will be to talk yourself through them.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- You are going to doubt yourself. Push through. You can do hard things.
- Find support. If you can't afford to hire help, find group (possibly on Facebook) that is doing the same things are you so that you can support each other.
- It takes time to build a business. Don't expect to launch your business and to have full time income right away. Plan for it to take time.
