Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Claudia Skinner, Founder of PosAbilities Clinic, LLC, located in Waterford, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We provide ABA services; we focus on helping teens and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities gain the skills they need to live independent lives and be integrated into their communities. Using the science of Behavior Analysis, we work with individuals to increase skills and decrease maladaptive behaviors.

Tell us about yourself

I am the mother of a child with intellectual disabilities, and there is a huge service gap as individuals age. So I saw the need, and being an entrepreneur, I decided to create an organization that could provide services for an unmet market. I started by buying one business about 12 years ago, which provided me with the opportunity to gain the skills needed to run a small business. From there, I founded the next three businesses, and now I am working on acquiring similar clinics to become part of the PosAbilities brand. What motivates me every day is seeing our clients grow and achieve goals that before seemed impossible.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

At 50, I decided to go back to school and get a second masters so that I could not just be a business owner but also experience the life of a front-line employee. I see that as my biggest accomplishment because I had to learn a whole new industry and become a behavior analyst myself to be able to support my employee's needs better.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The number of hats you have to wear and the amount of time I need to dedicate to my businesses. It is hard to have a balanced life.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First of all, get some accounting knowledge. Knowing your numbers is key to successfully running and growing your business.

Second, know your employees and understand their pain points.

Third, know who your clients are and understand their priorities.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

After becoming a business owner, there is nothing I find more rewarding. Especially in the field that we are in. I can honestly say I love what I do, and it is not about the money but about the difference we are making in the lives of our clients.
