Educate & Empower Black Women - Clean Beauty for Black Girls

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Hannah McCall, founder of Clean Beauty for Black Girls, located in Silver Spring, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Clean Beauty for Black Girls is focused on educating young Black girls & women about the harmful ingredients found in many of our personal care products. We are focused on having 'sister circles' and events that uplift the conversation about why this matters & how we as a community have the power to make a change.

Tell us about yourself

To put it simply, I have a fire in my belly to leave the world around me better than it was before me. What better way to do that than to empower ourselves with knowledge and influence? I remember the day I learned that 75% of personal care products marketed to Black women are harmful to our health? I quickly realized what we didn't know was harming us significantly & nobody was having the conversation. So I started to.

What motivates me? The Black women who have created businesses & products with Black women's health in mind motivate me daily. They have been doing the work we need to see more of. I also get a lot of energy from talking to young Black women. Their enthusiasm to learn more about what they don't know is empowering.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Getting a board in place, getting that 501c3 confirmation, and having our first conversation with young Black women at Howard University. It's really just the beginning for us.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Wanting everything to be done right now. It's a humbling process to learn a to-do list is for guidance. The most important thing you can do with your day is to prioritize what tasks bring you close to pushing the needle forward and do those first. Busy work is not necessarily work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You can read all the books you want. Nothing happens if you don't put what you've learned into action.
  2. Set hours to work on what needs to be done. It doesn't have to be 9-to-5, so find the time of the day you feel the most confident and productive.
  3. Learn to give yourself grace. Every day. Every hour. All the time.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

If Black women win, we ALL win.
