What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is called Clem&Thyme Nutrition. We are a nutrition and wellness center with two locations in Ohio - our main farmhouse office in Yellow Springs and an extension office in the Columbus area. We have a team of registered dietitians with varying backgrounds and specialties. Our holistic approach encourages our clients to find their balance by living in moderation, not deprivation.

Tell us about yourself

I grew up a farmer's daughter and was lucky enough to learn to appreciate wholesome nutritional foods at a young age. After struggling with my own body image in my teen years, I began dieting – but went about it in all the wrong ways. I finally made peace with food in my post-college years and found a love for cooking and exercise I enjoyed, later fueling my desire to help others also find their peace. In starting my business, I drew inspiration from my maiden name, Clem, one of my favorite snacks, clementines, and one of my favorite herbs, thyme. Thus, Clem&Thyme was born – a fun, fresh name that captures my personality as a dietitian and health professional.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am proud that I dared to go out on my own to start a functional nutrition practice, which was rare back in 2012. My growth led me to rebrand my business in 2017 into what is now known as Clem&Thyme Nutrition. Today, we are continuing to grow with our team of 12 dietitians.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Making your business a priority because you have a passion and stake in its success is easy. What becomes more challenging is balancing your business with your personal life. I've had to learn how to prioritize work responsibilities better so I don't miss out on cherished family time. My husband and I have three kids (Albany, Arlie, and Grant). Running a business and being a mom of three little kids is exhausting, but my heart has never been this full.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't be afraid of making mistakes. It's part of the process. You will learn and grow with time and experience. The best way to learn how to be better at running a business is to get started.
  2. If something isn't working, give yourself permission to change it. It can be hard to change your vision and goals, but if it's not working in practice, don't allow your valuable time and energy to be consumed.
  3. Don't hire people who can do the job. Hire people who can thrive in the position and make your business better.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

It's an exciting 6-month course I teach that includes a simple genetic test from the comfort of your home. You will learn what type of diet, exercise, and supplements work best for your body.
