Coaching Small Businesses Forward - CM Consulting

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chris Michel, Owner of CM Consulting LLC., located in Woodstock, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Coach Chris Consulting. I am a sales and business coach for the home services industry (HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical). I am also the author of The Red Chair Experience: Daily Inspiration for Success in Life and Business.

Tell us about yourself

The death of my brother in 2019 made me think about where I was in my life, and I realized that I was not happy doing what I had been doing and that I needed a change. After spending over 30 years in the corporate world of sales and management, I started my own business. I got to do what I love: helping other people succeed in their sales and small business careers. I am inspired to help others do what inspires them so that they may be fulfilled.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I got to help a new salesperson hit their sales goal during their second month in sales. They missed the first month by only 10%. They were expected to hit the sales goal of a seasoned salesperson without all the experience. I was able to help them get comfortable with their sales presentation and asking for the sale. Getting to the heart of the matter is what helps people succeed. We did not just cover the surface-type stuff. Understanding how someone speaks and thinks can help me understand how they are going to be successful at sales.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Knowing that not everyone is your ideal client when you are just starting. It is not always about money. We do not have to work with everyone. Picking the right client and charging the proper amount is critical to your business's success.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your value. Charge what you should charge, not what others think you should charge or what you think people can afford.
  2. Figure out what your ideal avatar/client looks like early. Do not be afraid to niche down to be successful.
  3. Do not be afraid to not work with someone. Saying no is a powerful tool that everyone has.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Starting a business is not easy, but it is not as hard if you have the right mindset and people to support you and your dream. Find a mastermind group or an accountability partner/coach to help you grow faster. You do not have to do this alone, even as an entrepreneur.
