What's your business, and who are your customers?

cmh consulting offers creativity and messaging that delivers unique results for our customers. We leverage an extensive network of influential leaders in education, government, sports, and business to build brands, influence policy, increase revenue, and engage key stakeholders in line with an organization’s strategic goals. We engage with our customers to learn about their needs and develop solutions to ensure they excel. Our customers include non-profits, advocacy groups, school districts, corporations, and individuals.

Tell us about yourself

I am a seasoned marketing and communications professional with a talent for storytelling and creating compelling campaigns. The development and implementation of a strategic communications plan with a limited budget include Giftedness Knows No Boundaries, which leveraged social media to maximize results. The award-winning It Takes… campaign positioned a school district on the national stage, generating awareness and securing more than $22 million in grants, sponsorships, and awards. Early in my career, I served as a special advisor to the U.S. Secretary of Education and a former U.S. Secretary of Labor.

What motivates me each day is the saying, “perception is reality,” and the power communications and messaging have in our world. Storytelling informs the public, guides the conversation, and influences change. I enjoy leveraging data to paint a powerful picture that goes well beyond a soundbite. I help clients develop solutions that position them as trusted sources and leaders in their field.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In a noisy and skeptical world, building a strong communications foundation requires a proactive and comprehensive plan. I have created a Communications Playbook that provides customized information and strategies that will ensure clear, compelling, convincing, and evidence-based messaging is delivered to all stakeholders, as well as secure earned media coverage in targeted markets.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

While there are many rewards, there are uncertainties and obstacles all business owners face. Dealing with the unpredictable tests your preparedness and questions your grit. Staying positive during these volatile times can be the toughest challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Combine your passion with a purpose, and work will be a pleasure. Having fun will ensure you capture a sense of accomplishment along your journey of building a business.
  2. Organizational skills are important, and attention to detail is critical in meeting your goals and objectives.
  3. Leverage social media to network and generate awareness. Share stories with family and friends who will spread the word on your behalf and help generate future business.
