Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skincare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rachel Kirby, Founder & CEO of Cocoon Skincare, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Cocoon offers skincare supplements for hormonal acne. High estrogen is a common cause of hormonal acne, especially among adult women. Our hero supplement (called BALANCE) is proven to support healthy estrogen levels for balanced hormones and acne-free skin. Although high estrogen is a more common issue among women, BALANCE is for both women and men over the age of 18 who are experiencing hormonal acne or other symptoms related to high estrogen levels.

Tell us about yourself

Like millions of women, I struggled with persistent hormonal acne and low self-esteem for years. Eventually, I discovered that my skin struggles (like that of many women) were the result of a hormonal imbalance. Within months of taking hormone-balancing supplements, I saw an incredible transformation in my skin and a huge opportunity to share these acne-healing ingredients with the world. This past January, I launched BALANCE, a natural supplement proven to support estrogen levels for balanced hormones and acne-free skin. Dealing with acne is not a superficial struggle. It's a heavy burden that can often make it nearly impossible to look in the mirror and see your worth. Thinking about all the women and men struggling with their skin and, subsequently, their mental health gives me immense motivation to continue building and growing my business. With this product, my goal is to provide a reliable solution that empowers those experiencing hormonal acne to feel confident in their skin every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Having only just launched about a month ago, my biggest accomplishments aren't grandiose, but to me, they're very much still worth celebrating. While my first "real" order was a very exciting moment, the first repeat purchase that I received felt like an even more special moment. It confirmed that my product was bringing people a lot of value and (hopefully) impacting their life in a really positive way.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Starting this business on my own has been hard. Not having a co-founder to help make tough decisions, develop creative ideas, or split the workload (not to mention the cost) has made the experience all the more difficult and, at times, isolating. As they say, "two brains are better than one." That said, being a "solopreneur" has allowed me to pursue my vision 100% and completely own the business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be very clear on why you're starting, and keep that "why" in the forefront of your mind. On tough days, it might be the only thing that motivates you to keep going.
  2. Develop routines and structures that keep you on track. There won't be anyone to tell you what to work on, when to work on it, or how to do it, so make sure you have a system that keeps you organized, focused, accountable, and sane.
  3. Being a business owner requires you to make a lot of difficult decisions every single day. The quicker you get good at making tough decisions, the better.
