Inspiration for Your Home and Life - Colonial House of Flowers

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in floristry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Christy Griner Hulsey, president, and owner of Colonial House of Flowers, located in Roswell, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Colonial House of Flowers is a garden and home brand deeply rooted in nature and plant life within the love of our family, pets, friends, and gatherings. Our artfully and personally curated product assortment explores the boundaries of a life lived outside (and in!) with a globally conscious and locally influenced point of view that is wholly our own. The doors to our flower shop opened in 1968... and we've been at it ever since! We invite you to watch, shop, make and create with us in Atlanta, Georgia, the USA, and around the world.

From tables to sofas and chairs to wall and lawn art, vases, planters, baskets, pet beds and bowls, and lamps and gifts, everything here is inspired by the idea of merging house and garden to create an experience for all of the senses. It doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful. And we thank you for being a part of it!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am proud of the designation and feel honored by the designation as a Mayesh Design Star. I look back fondly on that season of my life. I am also proud to have been recognized in the UGA 40 Under 40 and am proud to serve on the Women of UGA Alumni Leadership Council. I am also very proud to have joined the USDA and Certified American Grown Flowers on a trade mission to Shanghai, Beijing, and Kunming, China. I also have worked on the First Ladies Luncheon flowers in Washington, D.C., and helped with flowers for the White House. I have been very lucky to have friends and family who support me to accomplish some of the most amazing things.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Turning it off. I like to get absorbed in what I am doing. I find it hard to say no, and to stop because I really truly want to be there. But, I have two teenagers, a husband, a dog, and a cat at home that I love just as much like my job.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Dream Big. Work Hard, and remember, it doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful!
