Hamburg’s First Coworking Space - Convergence Coworking

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marie Rachelle, Founder of Convergence Coworking, located in Hamburg, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Convergence Coworking is a coworking space for freelancers, remote workers, and independent business owners. It's a hub for all things freelance! We are the official sponsor of Freelance Buffalo & Beyond, as well as an online community and resource for all. Our founder, Marie Rachelle (me), is a freelance community builder, leader, and advocate for freelancers across the U.S. and around the globe.

Tell us about yourself

I started as a freelancer providing social media management, copywriting, and marketing strategies for clients. From there, it quickly grew to become a go-to resource for aspiring freelancers and the beginnings of our regional, annual freelance event. Then, I was offered the opportunity to open a coworking space as an in-person hub for all things freelance and coworking. Today, I advocate for freelancers everywhere and a wealth of knowledge for independent business owners.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Opening Convergence Coworking is by far the highlight of my career. I never thought I'd be opening my own space, but it is the perfect accumulation of my work over the past decade, so I'm proud.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

You have to be incredibly resilient. Things do not always go as planned, but if you keep a positive attitude and believe in your overall mission, you will thrive.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get started now! You may not be totally ready, but the best way to learn is by jumping on both feet first.
  2. Find a mentor - if possible. If you cannot find a mentor, find your "people," aka those who understand the journey you're about to embark on, and support it. Unfortunately, it may not be your closest friends and family, but they're out there. Network and look for them.
  3. No business is complete without an accountant, attorney, and insurance agent. You may not need to engage them right away, but it's important to develop a relationship with them in order to have resources available for when you need them.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Freelance advocacy is a huge part of my journey now. If you haven't checked out the Freelance Isn't Free Act, I highly recommend you check out www.freelancersunion.org and read up!
