Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Celia Corbo, owner of Corbo Chiropractic, located in Etobicoke, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the owner and licensed Chiropractor of Corbo Chiropractic. I opened my practice in December 2020 and began living my dream of treating and helping people in the community. ‘Chiro’ literally means ‘of the hands,’ attesting to the treatment method of being a hands-on natural treatment and supporting the body’s ability to heal itself through the power of an adjustment. Chiropractic care is a patient-centered, regulated health care profession focusing on the spine, muscles, joints, and nervous system. We also diagnose and treat these structures. Chiropractic is for everyone and has been proven to be an effective holistic treatment. I treat all patients: office workers desiring to improve their posture and alleviate muscle tension, patients who lead an active lifestyle yet require rehabilitative support, children, pregnant women, and individuals who want to live a better quality of life.

Tell us about yourself

At a young age I was passionate about learning the human body; its ability to function and heal, without us having to think beyond what we wanted to accomplish that day. This was inspired by having dealt with multiple health issues growing up. In search of answers, I went to multiple doctors, some of which were great, but most of which made me feel like a number in the system. I never received clarity; I had to do my own research and become my own doctor, even before becoming a Chiropractor. My journey in self-healing turned into multiple hours researching nutrition and how foods affect our biochemistry and health. Simultaneously, I was studying Kinesiology and became more fascinated with human movement, especially the nervous system. After graduating from York University with Specialized honors in Kinesiology Bachelor of Science, I applied to Chiropractic College. Four years later, in 2020, I graduated from Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. I am now fortunate to be the doctor I always wanted to have, offering my patients clarity and getting to the root cause of their health concerns.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is having had the courage to open my practice during a pandemic. My desire to treat people and help them with their ailments has allowed me to persevere during these trying times.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner is the multiple roles that I take on daily. It is challenging; however, I believe that an optimistic attitude towards a situation will mold it to be a positive experience. I love my profession, which allows me to face any challenge head-on and focus on improving myself and my practice.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Believe in yourself – you have to be your #1 fan.
  2. Stand up for your business/dream – This is your dream and investment. Ask for opinions, do your research, but at the end of the day, go with your gut … it is your second brain after all ;)
  3. Don’t be afraid of the unknown – Going into a business will test you in every way. Part of the process is adapting to the small obstacles that will shape you. Every day there is something new to learn, be open to endless possibilities.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Remember your why. My why is “to be the doctor I’ve always wanted, providing my patients with understanding, knowledge, and support throughout their journey to better health.” This is what brings me back to my truth and keeps me committed to my patients and my practice. There are hardships along the way, but returning to your why will reignite your purpose and shine a light even in the darkest moments. It will all be worth it.
