Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in sports and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Spencer Corrao, Owner of Corrao Kinetics, located in Indianapolis, IN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Corrao Kinetics is an all-encompassing training company specializing in sports performance and individualized fitness training, both online and in-person. As the experts of human development, our scientifically backed, holistic approach to training, education, and nutrition has been proven to deliver results to ALL of our clients regardless of goal, age, or experience!

Our sports performance sessions have athletes from middle school all the way to the highest levels of professional sports and everyone in between. Our group fitness class, Motiv8, is a program designed to help each client move better, feel better, improve overall strength, and then target whatever each client's specific goal is.

Tell us about yourself

Since a young age, I have always loved working on my own health and seeing what my body was capable of. I told my mom when I was just a kid, I was going to help people train for the NFL Combine and the Olympics. The idea of helping a person's dreams come true and accomplishing their goals has always motivated me to be the best I can be for myself and for my clients!

I am a certified sports performance specialist and neuromuscular therapist. After obtaining my Kinesiology and Integrative Physiology degree from Hanover College in 2015, I spent six years as the Director of all Professional Athlete Performance Training at Bommarito Performance Systems in Miami, FL. There, I honed my skills and gained invaluable experience working with the smartest and hardest working team of coaches and therapists I could have asked for, as well as some of the world's most elite professional athletes, including Tyreke Hill, Stefon Diggs, Miguel Cabrera, JD Martinez, and Frank Gore, among countless others.

In addition to my work with top-level athletes, I also served as the personal trainer for the iconic rapper Gucci Mane and celebrated NBA Veteran Udonis Haslem, helping both men achieve their health and fitness goals while navigating the unique demands of their respective careers. Perhaps most notably, I was hand-selected by Ezekiel Elliott to train privately with him in Cabo San Lucas for six weeks in both 2017 and 2019.

I was able to earn the trust and admiration of some of the most respected names in the industry. Now, I am excited to bring my cutting-edge training systems and specialized knowledge back to my home state of Indiana, empowering each and every client to maximize their potential and achieve their ultimate fitness goals.

I am motivated to be better every day because I want to help all of my clients work toward their own goals and dreams. For some, that may be to play in the NFL, and others may want to be able to walk their dog without pain. To me, there is no difference in the excitement or satisfaction I get from a client achieving their goal with my help!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Starting. It was very hard for me to make the decision to leave a place that gave me so many opportunities and helped me develop my skills as a trainer, professional, and person. But, I realized that it would be a disservice to all those people and mentors that helped me to just stay where I was. I had an opportunity and the skill set to help people from my home state make their dreams and goals come true, so I had to do it. I am so happy and proud that I did.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Accepting failures. Running a business means you will always be doing new things that you have never had to do before. It has been difficult, at times, to set my ego aside and know when to ask for help. Sometimes, the best thing to do is accept a failure because that is the only way you can learn from it and come back better the next time.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start now. I am not saying to just quit your job and then try to figure it out. Start preparing now. Read and learn as much as you possibly can. Then execute a well-thought-out plan.
  2. Never stop learning. You will never know everything. The world is always changing and evolving, especially in the training/fitness industry, where new research is constantly coming out. You have to do the same.
  3. Focus on your clients! The best way to grow your business and build an environment that you will love to work in and be proud to be a part of is to help your clients accomplish their goals and to be happy. Happy clients want to come back to you. They are excited to come to the gym every day. When a client is happy and motivated, then they will work harder for you, and in return, you will want to work harder for them because you will be more excited about their success.
