What's your business, and who are your customers?
Cosmic Kale creates unique handcrafted wall hangings made of yarn, glass beads, and handmade jewelry. I have created wall hangings for many different people, including custom orders for decoration in a baby's room, creations for fellow lovers of Halloween, and personalized gifts for people to give to others.
Tell us about yourself
I created my first wall hanging three years ago, and after being asked to make custom orders for people several times over the following year and a half, I decided to make my passion for art into a business. I am motivated every day by the wonderful customers, friends, and family who have shown me so much support and have helped me out so much. I am also motivated by a desire to do what I truly love as more than just a hobby.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner would definitely have to be when I was asked by a couple I know to create a one-of-a-kind wall hanging for their new baby's room. I was very honored that they trusted me to create something that would be part of such an important chapter in their lives, and it really pushed me to create what is probably my favorite piece to date.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
I think the hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is being able to accept that sometimes things won't always go to plan, and you really have to be able to have your own back and lift yourself up and try not to be so hard on yourself when that happens. Not every day will be successful or good when it comes to the business, but it happens to everyone, and it really makes you appreciate the wonderful things and accomplishments that come along with owning a business.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
My top 3 tips would be:
First, to not be afraid or timid when it comes to starting everything up. It can be intimidating, but if you believe in yourself and in your mission and business, other people will as well.
Second, don't be afraid to put yourself out there and meet new people and experience new things. Some of your best connections can come from strangers or places you never imagined they would.
Lastly, surround yourself with a community of other business owners or people in the same field as you. Making friends who understand what you are going through and experiencing is a great way to have a support system when you need it. They also give you some of the best ideas on marketing, growing your business, and just random good ideas you might never have thought of yourself. It's also fun to do events with people that you are friends with!
