Build Healthier Habits - Crawford Coaching

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sami Grosse, founder of Crawford Coaching, located in Montreal, QC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At Crawford Coaching, we focus on building healthier habits into the daily routines of busy women to improve their long-term health and quality of life. No need to overhaul everything at once or at all. We work to improve sustainable lifestyle habits 1% at a time until we find the right balance that suits our client's lifestyle, preferences, and goals.

Tell us about yourself

Coaching is something I stumbled into by accident around 2012. It combines my love of studying human behavior, my need for personal growth and development, my passion for fitness, health, and helping others, as well as the freedom I crave by allowing me to be my own boss. In May 2016, I became a certified coach practitioner, and Crawford Coaching was born.

My experience working in ER for the last 14 years inspired me to want to work on the health promotion side of healthcare after witnessing many patients come in with chronic issues that healthier lifestyle habits could have helped manage and/or prevent. My own experience with burnout at 23 and again ten years later also highlighted the importance of making health and wellness a priority, no matter what your age.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Helping transform the lives of my clients. Some are now more active; some are eating healthier, some have improved chronic illness markers, some are better at managing their stress levels, etc.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Focusing on the big fish (i.e., the activities that bring in revenue) when there are so many shiny new things that all of the gurus are telling you are necessary to successfully run your business. It's very easy to get distracted by all the new marketing tactics and tech platforms, but you're better off keeping things are simple as possible, especially at the beginning.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find an accountability partner or group. You're going to get a lot of general and often conflicting advice from tons of well-meaning people, but unless they're trying to build a business like you are, I will take that advice with a grain of salt.
  2. Building a business takes time and effort. If you're not in it for the long haul, you may want to reevaluate whether building a business is for you. I've heard that it takes ten years to become an overnight success.
  3. Vanity metrics are not as important as you think. Having tons of likes/followers doesn't necessarily mean more money in the bank and vice versa. You never know who's paying attention to your content but not necessarily engaging with it.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

If you have an idea to help make positive change in the world, go for it. The world needs more of that.
