Helping You Create a Homeschool You Love! - Shela Yount

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shela Yount, Founder of Create Your Homeschool, located in North Carolina, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Create Your Homeschool exists to help homeschool mamas create a homeschool they love! We provide printables, resources, online courses, and more so that homeschool moms feel supported + well-equipped to take on their children’s educational needs!

Tell us about yourself

I am a homeschooled-homeschooling mama of three (yep, I was homeschooled my entire life!), and I've finally kicked traditional homeschooling in the pants and started creating a homeschool I love! Now, I get to help thousands of mamas all over the world do the same by providing high-quality content, resources, + a thriving community here at Create Your Homeschool.

I have a background in marketing + design and a healthy love for emojis. 🥳 I use my talents + skills to build + improve the Create Your Homeschool brand with creativity, passion, and a whole lot of fun!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is creating the community around Create Your Homeschool! Some of the BEST mamas in the world make up our community, and we all share the same core values: respect, inclusivity, kindness, and creating joy in our homeschool!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing for me is having only two hands 😅 As a small business, a lot of the hustle falls on me. Without the means to have a full team (yet!), I rely on my incredibly handsome and amazing husband — a LOT! Lee handles most of my technical support and a lot of the website design and marketing efforts. He makes being a small business owner so much better! I truly couldn't do what I do without his help!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't listen to all of the people out there who claim to get you to 10k months quick doing what they do. They have 10k months because they sell ONE $10k training to ONE person who thinks it's going to change everything for them. Instead, listen to your gut. You do NOT need a small, narrowed-down niche. I used to beat myself up for not having "one ideal client," - but my business is successful because I listened to my gut and just started helping homeschool moms of all kinds thrive!
  2. Do NOT spend money on ads until you've successfully created something people are ORGANICALLY signing up for. If they aren't signing up for it organically, they won't click your paid ad either. Once you have something that's converting, THEN you can run ads to it because you know you'll get a great return on your investment!
  3. Do something that brings you joy. The hours + days are LONG in the beginning. But if it brings you joy, it won't feel like you're burning a candle on both ends. I promise you that there are people out there who want and need what you can give them. And it will be so much more rewarding to share it with them if it's making you smile in the process!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I’m an expert at sustainable homeschooling (you know, homeschooling for the long haul!), a nerd when it comes to homeschooling more efficiently, and my passion is teaching other homeschool mamas how to create a homeschool they can be proud of!

As a small-town Carolina mama, blogger, and educator, my happiest days are spent behind the scenes sharing my homeschooling secrets with mamas all over the world! If you are a homeschool family who's CRAVING connection with like-minded mamas and more JOY in your homeschool, head on over to Instagram, and let's chat! ♥️
