Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Selina Ramirez, founder of Cualli Nutrition, located in Houston, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I've had a long journey with my own health and fitness. It took me a long time to understand what my needs were. Now I want to help people avoid the same mistakes I made and help them learn what their body needs. Cualli is a Nahuatl word that means "good" or "something good," which is how I approach nutrition. Everyone should have good nutritional knowledge that is tailored to their preferences and needs.

Tell us about yourself

I struggled a lot growing up. I was overweight and uncomfortable. In my early twenties, I just felt too young to feel so out of shape. I had already started training jiu-jitsu, but I knew nothing would change unless I changed my eating habits. I began reading and trying to learn how to feed myself. I finally started to feel and feel my age. Eventually, my love of nutrition and desire to help others grew so much that I decided to return to school and obtain a master's degree in human nutrition.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is being where I am today. I've taken many steps in this journey, and I've made it so far. I've met a lot of people that doubted me, and I've managed to overcome all the obstacles. Today, I am a Latina that overcame my own struggles with my health, obtained a graduate's degree, became a business owner, a weightlifter, and a jiu-jitsu blackbelt.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being in the nutritional field is battling misinformation. Everyone has an opinion on food, and there is a lot of hearsay out there. But it's also one of my biggest drivers. I want to help people learn the correct information to help them better their own health. I've really dedicated my social media profiles to help redirect anyone that has been misguided.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

If anyone is looking to start their business, I would tell them to start now. There will not be a perfect time. I'd also say not to care about what others might think. If you believe in something, do it. It may not be easy, and it will definitely be scary being on your own, but it will be worth it. But be ready to commit yourself to your business fully. Branching out on your own will require a lot of time and dedication.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Many people might assume a nutritional advice business is about losing weight, but I really see it as bettering your health. We all have different goals and different reasons for wanting to better our health. But it really is the best thing you can do for yourself and for your loved ones.
