Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Jessi Brown, Owner of Cultivate Health Chiropractic, located in Rockford, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run a small chiropractic office where I treat people as well as small and large animals. My practice community is made up of the people in my rural area: farmers, blue-collar workers, older folks, and folks with office jobs.

Tell us about yourself

Chiropractic adjustments are one small thing I can do to try and heal people inside a broken medical system. I am nothing special as a chiropractor; we all do adjustments. I try to empower my patients that they do have control over their health and their life. In many facets of caring for our food, health, work, and our obligations, we are made to feel disempowered, victims of a situation. I fight again that learned helplessness every day. I want everyone to enjoy their time and health.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

This practice has grown primarily on referrals only, and I am proud of that. Proud that it is possible to build a right-sized business by treating people honestly. Chiropractic offices are not known for their integrity or transparency. I don't gatekeep on people's health.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Setting goals with my ideal work/life balance and fighting the societal push for endless growth.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find ample financial support for your first three years, so you don't feel the need to compromise your service/product just to make ends meet. If you set up bad systems to get by, it will bite you when you're busy.
  2. You do not have to do what everyone else in your profession says is the standard.
  3. Learn to run your numbers. Whatever benchmark metrics apply to your profession, learn them. Know your numbers. Run your numbers. Tweak something, and run them again.
