Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Peggy Izzo, Founder of Dance 1220 by Peggy Izzo, located in Croton, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the founder and owner of Dance 1220 by Peggy Izzo. We teach dance to children aged 2-19.

Tell us about yourself

Having grown up in a city with parents who worked full time, my mother sought to keep me busy. She registered me for dance classes to ensure I was not getting into trouble while she and my father worked. This was when my love of dance blossomed.

As I got older, my dance instructors took me on as an apprentice, and this was when my love for choreography and teaching bloomed. I have always had a deep passion for working with children, and after having four of my own, I decided it was time to instill my love of dance and movement in the children in my local community. My constant motivation is to teach children to love themselves as they are through dance.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been instilling my passion and philosophy into my youngest daughter Danielle. I have watched her continue to teach dancers with love and compassion while also taking the business in her own direction. She is now the director and part owner of the studio.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part is balancing the business aspect while maintaining personal relationships with your dancers and their families.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you are passionate about what you are pursuing.
  2. Be knowledgeable about your business and industry.
  3. Be willing to grow, change and adapt with the times. You can’t be static.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Opening, owning, and directing my own studio has been an amazing journey. It was often difficult but always satisfying because I got to combine my two passions, dance, and children! It makes me even more proud to watch my legacy continue under my own daughter, Danielle.
