Dedicated to Dance - Dance NY NJ

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in dance education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dakota Pizzi, Instructor at Dance NY NJ, located in Roselle Park, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I’m a professional Latin and Ballroom dancer and dance instructor. I teach all ages and levels of students, from pre-professional children to wedding couples to adults, to learn to dance for enjoyment and health.

Tell us about yourself

I have been a dancer my whole life, and part of the reason why I love to teach dance is to share that joy with as many clients as possible. Dance truly heals the soul, takes you away from your everyday worries, and engages the body in a way no other sport can. This is always in my mind when meeting with new clients because dance truly does improve their lives, even in the smallest ways. My main motivation as a dancer has always been self-improvement, and it’s a privilege to get to help other people grow through my work!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been to see the success of my students as they grow and have gone on to win championships in their own age divisions. In my own dancing, I’ve been blessed to have won the National Latin Cabaret Division and become a National Finalist in competitions, as well as appear on the TV Show “So You Think You Can Dance” with my husband and dance partner, Misha Randelovic.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part about being a business owner is the fact that you have to take responsibility for any matters that arise, whether that be a leaky roof, answering calls during “working hours,” or helping a nervous competitive student get ready to perform. You truly are the “ chief, cook, and bottlewasher,” haha.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Make sure you love whatever you do because it ALL takes work. Second, do you have an idea? DO IT. Don’t wait for someone else to do it for you or before you. You need to carve out your own creative way in order to find success in any field. Lastly, surround yourself with people who believe in what you do or have been successful at what you’re beginning. Success takes a village.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

If you have ever been interested in beginning ballroom or Latin dance lessons, start now; we’d love to have you on our team!
