Dachshund Adventure - Danny Gordon Art

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Danny Gordon, Founder of Danny Gordon Art, located in Oklahoma City, OK, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Danny Gordon Art is primarily an online retail business that largely works under the print-on-demand model. Although multiple websites are involved with varied product lines, including dannygordonart.com, this business model involves customers selecting and buying my dog art designs on a variety of products ranging from t-shirts to plush sherpa blankets. My customers are dog and pet lovers who enjoy accurately depicted dog breeds with a caricature twist.

Tell us about yourself

I am an individual who loves creating art and teaching art to children. I always aspired to make a living with my art, so when I used to do outdoor art festivals, I always paid close attention to people's responses to my creations.

When I introduced dogs, I could tell that was my ticket to success, so I focused on developing a large body of dog art that encompassed as many breeds as possible.

Like most artists, I love to draw. I also get a big kick out of seeing and hearing people's responses to my work. When conceiving ideas, I try to make sure they're relatable to dog and pet owners. For example, probably my biggest selling image of all time is "Squeakers" a black and tan Dachshund who is holding a partly chewed high-heeled shoe in one paw and a sign in the other paw which reads: This toy didn't have a squeaker.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

There are several, and even though the one I have decided to isolate is still developing, I'd say my greatest accomplishment is building my very own online store, dannygordonart.com.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing for me (and I would guess this applies to many) is having to wear many hats, most of which do not fit properly at all!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Try to find someone you respect who has achieved the kind of success that you'd like to emulate and query them regularly.
  2. Do not expect your plans and ideas to work out without difficulties.
  3. Always be looking to grow your team, as you cannot handle everything.
