Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kristen Grundy, Creator of DAWN 11:11 Collective, located in Austin, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

DAWN 11:11 Collective “Art For the Night Breed” – We are an art collective between two niche artists that provides artwork, photography, and apparel for non-mainstream, non-conformists, subcultures, and anyone with imagination.

Tell us about yourself

As an art photographer, my style of photography wasn’t widely accepted or utilized amongst the editorial/advertising markets of the masses. Therefore, I needed a way to widen my audience and sell art. I came together with another niche artist to create unique art products that would be more tangible for people. We started making ready-to-hang pieces that do not require framing and mounting, as well as apparel and household products. The motivation comes from the excitement of our customers for finding something unique that speaks to them, as well as having people look deeper into the artwork we create and react to it.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The ability to create my own schedule and to be working without feeling like I’m working - because I am doing what I love.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The constant white-knuckling that comes along with financial uncertainty. As an owner, you are utterly responsible for everything, so not having any guarantees with anything can be a bit nerve-racking.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don’t worry about what your competition is doing. In fact, take a look around at what everyone else is doing and do something different.
  2. Find a way to incorporate your unique individuality into as many aspects of the business as possible.
  3. Don’t let any naysayers stray you from what motivates you.
