Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Debbie Fazio, founder of Precious Moments Babeez and PNSW, located in Hamilton, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our main clientele is new and expecting families and the professionals who support them. I have two businesses. The Global Perinatal Support Worker program educates professionals to support new and expecting parents through the entire perinatal period. Precious Moments Babeez offers education and emotional and physical support to new and expecting families through their pregnancy and labour and into parenting.

Tell us about yourself

When I had my children, I realized very quickly that not only was there very little support for new parents but even worse, there was very hard to access. My experience as a new mother with three children under 2 was very difficult, and thus I was on a mission to ensure no other parent went through the same struggles that I did. Creating a village and community of trained professionals who could support families with knowledge and compassion started almost 20 years ago, and today we are still going strong! My motivation is to hear the stories and be able to hear from families who are so grateful for their experience with us and how it has completely changed their entire experience through their pregnancy, childbirth, and journey into parenting.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Over 20 years, that has been many. However, I do feel that the biggest accomplishment is that we have been here for so long. Being able to say we are almost 20 years old in itself creates a level of trust for families and attests to the level of support we have been offering families over the years. To think that our first clients with babies now have children almost 20 years old is unheard of!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Of course, there are tons of up and downs in owning a business, and endurance and grit are definitely needed to continue the hard journey. It can often seem like your efforts aren't pushing you forward but knowing it's two steps forward and one step back is important to keep in mind. No one said it would be easy, but it is definitely worth it!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a village to support you in your business. Mentors, partners, and even collaborators.
  2. Have a plan for the first 1-2 years, 2-5 years, and then five years plus. This will keep you accountable for continued growth and success.
  3. Don't give up! It is very hard to give up when things get challenging. Take a breath, regroup, reach out to your network for suggestions and advice and KEEP GOING!
