Leadership Matters - Debbie Hearty Consulting Group

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Debbie Hearty, Founder of Debbie Hearty Consulting Group, located in Denver, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Debbie Hearty Consulting Group is a small consulting firm dedicated to coaching leaders, empowering teams, and fostering thriving cultures to maximize impact in service of the common good.

Tell us about yourself

First, as a high school math teacher and, eventually, in executive leadership, I have remained passionate about education. My commitment to public service has brought me to senior-level government and social services spheres. We have the opportunity each and every day to make the world a better, kinder, more just place, and I bring this conviction into everything I do. When not working, I can be found either enjoying the Colorado lifestyle or traveling with my husband, two boys, and dogs.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My expertise in Executive Leadership has resulted in the following successes:

  • Culture: increased diversity in hiring and retention in key roles, increased employee and team engagement and effectiveness in support of key organizational priorities, and led culture and engagement efforts across multiple organizations.
  • Strategy: success in bringing pilots to scale across large and complex organizations created innovation talent pipelines for multiple employee groups.
  • Organizational Development: received national recognition for creating a top workplace through a national education organization designed and implemented a comprehensive approach to professional development aligned to robust growth and performance systems.
  • Leadership: designed multiple customized leadership development pipelines, coached senior leaders, and facilitated senior leadership teams.
  • People Services: led human resources departments in large, complex organizations from 2,500 to 15,000 employees and 10 unions designed and delivered adult learning from small groups to over 1000 in a variety of content: instruction and education, equity, values, leadership, and culture.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I thrive in a collaborative, team-based environment. Running my own business could result in isolation, so I work at fostering a sense of team in all I do and actively pursue connections with others that help me connect and grow.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Know yourself, know your focus, and know how to honor and build relationships
