Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alan Tay, Co-Founder of Delphi Technology Corp, located in Winnipeg, MB, CA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Founded in 2020, Delphi Technology Corp (DTC) is leading the digital transformation of adaptive training with virtual and augmented modalities, starting with the aviation and aerospace industries. To address the shortage of labor and demands of insufficient training capacity, Delphi's product, VR City™, is a metaverse training campus featuring adaptive learning powered with artificial intelligence, providing training anywhere in the world. With high accessibility at a lower cost barrier, VR City can be used to its fullest capabilities to produce interactive, accessible, and affordable courses for students. We have numerous partnerships with different service providers, associations, and academia. We successfully partnered with Elevate Aviation to expand options for female aviation enthusiasts. Elevate Aviation is a non-profit organization in Edmonton, Alberta, and they introduce women to incredible careers in aviation. In partnership with Manitoba Aerospace, we enabled their "Aviation and Aerospace in Manitoba Day" event to continue in the local community despite the pandemic. Delphi Technology Corp collaborated with Manitoba Aerospace to develop a virtual training program for students and instructors interested in Aviation and Aerospace. The goal of AAiM Week is to introduce students in grades 6 to the aerospace and aviation sectors in Manitoba via a week-long immersive and virtual experience. This event brought together over 800 students from across Manitoba and had an outreach to remote communities, including students from the Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

We used aviation and aerospace as a catalyst; however, due to the global skills gap that affects various industries worldwide, we are now exploring how our product can support training and upskilling roles such as nurses, engineers, truck drivers, and many more!

Tell us about yourself

I have always been an aviator at heart. I have been in the aviation industry for decades, starting in the Singapore Air Force, where I met my co-founder, Michael Bogaars. I have worked as a commercial airline pilot, and over the years, I've also earned a Class 1 Aircraft Flight Instructor license. However, a part of me was always driven by an entrepreneurial spirit and a passion for innovation. With this drive to create change and contribute to issue resolution via my expertise and experience, I've integrated aviation and entrepreneurship into my life through aviation-related company ventures. Currently, my work responsibilities range from commercializing new products to developing an aviation business group. Michael Bogaars and I founded Delphi Technology Corp because we believe that aviation instruction's future lies in the use of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence virtual instructors and augmented reality simulations. In response to emerging flaws in existing training programs and strategies, the Delphi Technology Corp team put together a new, exciting and improved way to inspire aviation and aerospace learning using VR City. Additionally, we were motivated to advocate for increased female participation in STEM fields and aviation and aerospace specialties.

We envision VR City to be the education Metaverse hub whereby there are vocational course modules, mentorship, career guidance, and more. Our platform solves many industry training problems, such as meeting an increasing demand for training capacity, catering to diverse learning styles, and providing affordable training. We are committed to empower aspiring professionals by enabling adaptive, accessible, and quality competency-based training for the next generation.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

This year Delphi Technology Corp was honored to have received the Canadian SME Start-up Business of the Year 2021. This symbolizes an incredible recognition from the industry and motivates my team and me to continue our work toward a sustainable future where quality education is accessible for everyone

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the biggest challenges for a start-up business owner has been finding the right direction to move in when it comes to sharing the information and educational content we have with others. The solution to that problem has come from talking to a lot of people. Socializing and networking with other industry professionals to feed off their knowledge helped overcome that barrier.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Think twice before jumping into it. Or not just twice, twice, and twice. Think four times. You always have to think logically before making any decision.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

My company is currently seeking business partners and investors in all regions of the world to inspire the next generation of working professionals. Delphi is committed to empowering aspiring professionals by enabling adaptive, accessible, and quality competency-based training for the next generation.
