What's your business, and who are your customers?
Desautel Law is a law firm handling environmental issues and litigation, coastal zone law, land use and planning, and public utility and energy law. We serve municipal and private clients, quasi-government and government clients, and non-profit groups.
Tell us about yourself
I grew up in Foster, RI. It's a pretty rural town, and I spent a lot of time outside in the woods as a kid. Having that young connection to this planet's natural resources saved me in a lot of ways and motivated me to become an environmental scientist. I thought that getting a degree in Biology would result in saving the planet. As it turns out, I am a better advocate for the planet as an environmental attorney. My firm litigates civil environmental cases and assists clients with local and state environmental, coastal law, public utility, and energy regulatory matters. This is a tried and true area of expertise for me because they all have an element of environmental conservation, protection, and consciousness that I really care about.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Being able to say, with honesty, that I successfully went after what I wanted to do for the planet. And that we are going into year eight without compromising that goal.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Human resources!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Create something that you can sustain interest in and passion for.
- Write a business plan, update it, and review it. Often.
