Unlock Your Leadership Potential - Desired Effects Coaching

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal & business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Desiree Musselman, Owner of Desired Effects Coaching, located in Eagle Mountain, UT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At Desired Effects Caching and Training, we focus on helping people in leadership learn how to rewire the default tendencies that are holding them back from success and fulfillment in their lives and relationships.

Tell us about yourself

I have led seven multimillion-dollar businesses over the years and doubled their profits within months of coming on board.

In 2008, I was blessed with the experience of working with a professional coach. I struggled deeply with my self-worth. It was holding me back in my corporate leadership position and showing up in my personal life as insecure and withdrawn from the people I loved.

I remember when I was navigating being a leader, and I struggled with knowing what to say and how to hold myself and others accountable. I would worry that I was being too hard or not hard enough when having difficult conversations. I would second-guess everything I did! Then I realized my worry was getting in the way of my leadership and happiness.

Being coached was life-changing. It helped me build my confidence, stop holding myself back, and face my fears. I knew it was what I was missing from my repertoire for developing my teams. I still have a coach, and they help propel me to greater heights and opportunities, just like I do for others.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say my most significant accomplishment as a business owner is cultivating my strategic partnerships. I am mindful of who I partner with and focus on aligned values and win-win relationships where I can support my partners, as well as they can help me. This brings a layer of fulfillment and collaboration to my business that keeps me even more motivated, confident, and engaged.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Wanting to help everyone is the biggest challenge that I see. Whether it comes from a need to support others, a fear of saying no, or a desire to avoid losing out on income, we often want to say yes to everything, even when we know we can't give each project our full attention.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Mindset is everything. You will question everything you do, look to gurus for a successful plan, and not trust yourself. You will do great if you lean into your intuition and trust yourself to take action.
  2. Listen to others' advice, then trust your gut. Friends, family, and colleagues will all have opinions on how you should run your business. If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't.
  3. Make friends with your competition. The people in your field of work are the best suited to support you and answer questions. We often fear losing business or ideas to others in our industry. Set clear boundaries for yourself, and don't be afraid to learn from their experience.
