Weight Loss for Busy Professionals - Diet Redefined

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Helen Tieu, Owner of Diet Redefined, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a dietitian business that focuses on helping busy professionals to lose weight and, more importantly, to keep it off without food restrictions or traditional dieting. The clientele can range from parents, teachers, students, executives, business owners, healthcare workers, or essentially, anyone who has tried diets in the past and would like a more sustainable, balanced, and flexible approach with professional guidance and accountability.

Tell us about yourself

I've always wanted to start a private practice and recently made the leap. What got me started is knowing I have unlocked potential in me to positively impact the world on a larger scale and do something bigger with my life beyond my own basic survival needs. I love helping others and positively impacting others. I am motivated each day by this, knowing that there are people out there who need my help and are waiting to be helped, viewing it as my moral obligation and duty to help those people, and viewing the whole process of growing a business as a part of my personal development journey.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I just started my business, so I can't speak of much accomplishments at the time of this writing. I would say that I am very happy to have invested in a business program/mentor, to learn from someone who has been through the process, knows the ins and outs, and has what I want, rather than wasting more time - years - trying to figure it out myself. This also delays how quickly I can start helping others. I am also learning to be more of an action taker - taking action without giving myself time to overthink everything and second guess myself - just trusting the process.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me personally, what's been hardest has been learning about marketing, how to market myself, and getting my product/service into the hands of others who need it. I didn't study marketing in school, so the business side of things is very new to me. Marketing also requires getting outside of my comfort zone and learning to feel uncomfortable, as I am naturally not someone who shares much or much on social media. Having a business program/mentor has helped massively with this!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get started now. Rather than waiting for the "perfect time" when everything is perfect. Because once you start, you will eventually get done what needs to be done, when it needs to be done.
  2. Take quick action and take massive action. Again, rather than delaying. Learn to be an action taker and execute quickly, rather than giving yourself time to overthink it.
  3. Invest in a mentor or program to teach you how to start, run and grow a business. So you accelerate your growth in less time, ultimately make more money, and impact more lives sooner. Remember that it's an investment!
