Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dominic Tambuzzo, Founder of Dominic Tambuzzo Ayurveda and Massage, located in Montreal, QC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a certified Ayurvedic Practitioner, Massage Therapist, and yoga instructor. My customers are people that are seeking a holistic, natural, and alternative approach to medicine and healing.

Tell us about yourself

In 2010 I left the corporate world to follow an instinctive and powerful calling that has defined me since. In 2009, in the midst of and stressors of running my own successful food business, I decided to become a certified yoga instructor. After selling this business a year later, I left everything behind to explore the roots of yoga and Ayurveda in India. I obtained my first certification as an Ayurvedic Massage Therapist from the mentoring hands of two Ayurvedic doctors in northern India. Upon my return to Montreal, I had all things Ayurveda on my mind. My memorable trip and intense connection to this healing art touched on something that moved and inspired him deeply. I had found my passion. I wanted to learn more.

Luckily, I didn't have to travel halfway around the world again. An Ayurveda spa and wellness center, owned and run by a 4th generation Ayurvedic Vaidya (senior scholar), was literally 1/2 a block up the street from me. In December 2013, I graduated as an Ayurvedic Practitioner and Lifestyle consultant. Destiny called, and I picked up! I love what I do: being of service, helping, supporting, guiding, and awakening people to their self-healing power, potential and health journey.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'd say it's having established a viable, steady, and growing income thru an unknown modality such as Ayurveda, having developed a respected and trusted name for myself as a practitioner, and having promoted Ayurveda in general over the last 10 years.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Finding the time, energy, and creative ways to expose, promote and grow the business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Because it's such hard and challenging work to get off the ground, make sure it excites you, and it's something you love and see yourself doing for the next 10-15 years.
  2. Build good connections and friendships in your industry.
  3. Find creative ways to be seen/heard. Word of mouth will always be one of the most powerful ways for people to find you, especially in the service business. Keep your clients happy!
