Thoughtful and Clean UX/UI and Branding - Don Daskalo Design

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Don Daskalo, Owner of Don Daskalo Design, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am in the business of solving problems through creative design. For example, a client may want to separate themselves from the crowd through a unique rebranding and visual identity; this is where my services would come in. My customers consist of early-stage to medium-sized businesses which are seeking design-related solutions.

Tell us about yourself

My business truly kickstarted when I realized I could put my creativity and design skills to practice in a way that positively impacts people and businesses. My earliest client project was a logo design for a locally-owned new clothing line. Starting off as a young new designer and the clients being in an early stage with their business as well as having a tight budget, our business compatibility aligned at the time. It was an exciting first project and really helped validate that I could make something out of my skills and create a real impact. The logo turned out to be very successful and recognizable in the community. This result and feeling is what I strive for with every new project I take on. It motivates me to know that my work will create a positive impact on the business and client, as well as getting to see my work live to the public.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as an owner is when I hear back from a client about how great a project turned out or how it has benefited them. Additionally, when a past client refers me, or someone finds me through word-of-mouth, I take this as the greatest compliment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is staying on top of multiple projects at a time and avoiding creative burnout. It is important to take breaks and keep a clear headspace while still being able to deliver high-quality results at the end of the day.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Figure out what you are good at and become an expert in that. Quality over quantity goes a long way, even when it can be tempting to go for the small or less exciting projects just because you can.
  2. It's never too early to start. The reality is that you will never "be ready" if you don't take the first step in applying your skills or starting that business. You will learn a lot more by doing it, and your growth will be exponentially faster.
  3. Communication is key. Always communicate your true feelings (in a professional) to your clients or prospective clients. This reduces or even eliminates potential misunderstandings that can arise. So talk about everything upfront or as it comes. Holding your thoughts back can lead to resentment and tension on both sides. Having communication also creates trust and confidence.
