What's your business, and who are your customers?
I coach people in storytelling (for business, performance, teaching, or promoting connection in any situation). I teach people to become highly effective storytellers as well as coaches themselves. I teach people from all walks of life to give feedback that increases both understanding and success.
Tell us about yourself
As a first-year teacher of troubled teens in a private school, I tried to gain my students' attention in many ways without success. But when I stumbled on storytelling, I not only gained their full attention but was also able to connect nearly any subject to their inner concerns and desires. I have been following that sense of joyful connection ever since!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I have been self-supporting as a freelance performer, teacher, and coach since 1971. Over that time, many of my colleagues, clients, and students have discovered not only the power of storytelling to create a connection but also the ability of supportive, insightful coaching to empower communicators of all kinds.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
As a solo entrepreneur, whenever I take extended time off, my income takes a hit! Fortunately, I love my work enough to keep on keeping on.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find what is fascinating for you, then experiment with ways to convey that to others.
- It was true decades ago when I began, and it's even truer today: you can profitably share what delights you with those who are open to being delighted by it.
- Business is less about making a profit for yourself and more about helping others profit from their own interests and desires.
