Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Sharon Dickerson, a holistic and biological dentist based in Denver, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a biological dentist focusing on assisting individuals in achieving ultimate health. I provide state-of-the-art, holistic dental care in an environment that fosters well-being, collaboration, and comfort.

Tell us about yourself

I was introduced to dentistry at a very young age by my father, who was also a practicing dentist. As I pursued this career, it was my own personal dental health that motivated me to seek innovative answers to oral disharmony. As a result of this journey, I became dedicated to helping others in similar situations. Being able to support patients in transforming their oral vitality and whole-body health brings me unmatched joy.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I believe that my most gratifying accomplishment relates to starting my own practice in Denver, CO, in 2019. Up to that point, I had practiced for about 30 years in my birthplace, Michigan. Not many of my colleagues would embark on the process of starting a brand new practice in another state when they are nearing 60 years old. However, to me, it is a story of honoring my intuition. I felt called to share my healing modalities with a larger audience and had faith that my business model would resonate in Denver. It feels like a beautiful, collaborative accomplishment to have successfully grown our practice and to be thriving 4 years later.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Personally, I feel that being both a small business owner and a primary dentist is the greatest challenge. Not only are you tasked with managing all the aspects of running a business, but you are also responsible for providing comforting patient care and high-level dentistry. It is certainly rewarding but would be nearly impossible without the support of a wonderful team.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take time to truly consider what you are offering your target customer. How will your services solve a problem for them? The more specific you can be, the better!
  2. Seek the advice and support of those who are already running businesses in your industry. Having solid mentors is priceless!
  3. Remember to breathe! At any point in the process, being a business owner can feel all-consuming. For me, it is critical to take time to care for myself and keep my perspective.
