Empower, Equip, Educate and Include All - Dr. Yvette Pegues

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Yvette Pegues, Co-Founder of Your Invisible Disability Group, located in Canton, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Disability Resource Services is my business. We provide Keynotes, training, Corporate retainment, Employee Resource Group installation/support, Disability Client resource navigation, and brand advocacy.

Tell us about yourself

I began my career as a scientist before reinventing myself as an activist. It started as an IBM Network Systems/Cloud Engineer college hire. Within a few years, I added Program/Project manager to my skillset, then a Worldwide Program Delivery Executive for Asia and Canada. Without warning, I suffered a traumatic brain/spinal cord injury.

Today, I serve the community as a disabled Executive and co-founder of Your Invisible Disability Group; The organization exists to Empower, Educate, Advocate and Include people with disabilities in corporate, schools, ERGs, SMBS, medical institutions, and society.

I’m motivated and encouraged by how my personal experience and collective work includes disability in every space as well as in the DEIB (disability, equity, inclusion, belonging) conversation.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Working alongside global advocates and activists whose mission is to restore civil and human rights to the largest minority in the country.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Managing a business around chronic pain, remote workers, and architectural and attitudinal barriers.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Research, Resources, and Recovery:

  1. Research your market, audience, and affinity to fill gaps that add (untapped) value.
  2. Resources include (scalable) financial, human and technological assets.
  3. Recovery plan must be built before you start.

At the end of the day, do what you are naturally good at, built for, and love.
