What's your business, and who are your customers?

I operate a winery, and my customers are wine enthusiasts. It is a project born out of my passion for producing site-specific, terroir-driven California wines. Our singular focus is crafting wines of distinction. Sourcing fruit from premier vineyards in Santa Barbara County, including the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, Ballard Canyon AVA, and Los Olivos District AVA, we strive to create wines that express their place and vintage.

Tell us about yourself

I got started drinking and collecting wine. I found out that there was a location near my home that I could use to make wine on a commercial level, and I started there. The craft keeps me going day to day. The struggle to make that elusive "great" wine always looms.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I don't know if I have a single biggest accomplishment. I would say just getting started in the first place is the biggest accomplishment by far.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Specific to my business, the hardest thing would be losing a wine to spoilage. That's a tough emotional and financial loss.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. It takes both vendors and customers to run your business. Treat them both equally.
  2. Make sure you have more capital than you budget for. You can never predict every cost.
  3. No matter what is happening internally, always project success externally.
