Bold and Exotic - EHTYL B.

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Renee Wilson, Founder of EHTYL B. LLC., located in Newark, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is an Ankara apparel company. I make clothes for men, women, and children, as well as accessories. Anyone who is a fan of bright colors, funky prints, and custom designs is my customer.

Tell us about yourself

I am a self-taught designer who began sketching/designing when I was a high school freshman. Since then, I designed and sketched here and there but didn't start getting more serious with it until I had come to a point in my career where I realized that corporate America was not where I wanted to be. I wanted to do what I loved, and I wanted more control over my schedule and over how I spent my time. That led me back to fashion/design. I was always happiest when I was sewing/sketching/designing. Because of that, I don't really need or seek any motivation to do what I do because it's truly what I love doing.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is being able to get to the point where I can financially support myself and my family with just my businesses.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is the fact that everything is literally on your shoulders - the successes, the failures, everything. While it's great to be your own boss, there's also the reality that all final decisions concerning the business lay with you. That can be a lot of pressure.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take the time to research what type of business would be beneficial for you (i.e., LLC, sole proprietor, S-Corp, etc.)
  2. Depending on the type of business you are starting, start-up costs can be minimal, or they can be high - either way, make sure to have an idea going in what that will be
  3. Draft a business plan - this will be very helpful to you in the long run. The business plan will outline your business's strengths, weaknesses, obstacles, threats, competitive advantage, financial projections, etc.
