Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Myriam Kane, Coach at Elemental Fitness, located in Leesburg, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

As a forever student, my passion is in empowering and equipping others with the tools to become the version of themselves that is as physically, mentally, and spiritually grounded as possible to enable a Life of Fulfillment and Purpose. I invest much time sifting through evolving science and the research of people far smarter than myself and present others with ideas and information to explore as we navigate a path to Whole Person wellness. Of course, I enjoy doing my own me-search, as well.

In my opinion (and experience), Pilates is the Foundation of Efficient Movement, and I share the principles with a strong belief that all other movement practices and sports will greatly benefit from a Pilates practice at its core (pun intended;). I am also an avid enthusiast of walking (and running). There is extensive data supporting that our ability to walk well is an indicator of longevity. With that in mind, anyone that works with me will learn more about their feet and hips and how to reclaim/maintain them for sustainable walking practice.

Although I do work with and greatly enjoy all ages and genders, I have a deep passion for helping mid-lifers (like myself) Redefine this particular chapter in life. Our age does not impede our growth...but our strategies for our goals need to be addressed. Exercise programs, diet, rest cycles, and mindset need to be reassessed for optimal results. Although working out as we did in our 20s or 40s will perhaps not glean the same results...yes, much can be reclaimed!

Tell us about yourself

My exercise physiology and movement education began after my first child was born. I took the opportunity to change gears and study something I was passionate about, and it gave me flexibility. When my daughter was a young teen, she was diagnosed with a “slight scoliosis that we would watch.” That was the turning point from my enjoyment of Pilates as a student to seeking out a program for certification, which ultimately brought me to Body Arts and Science Intl. (BASI) (Yes, incorporating Pilates into my daughter’s workouts greatly reduced her scoliosis, and it is non-discernible today!) In 2013 I had the honor of becoming Faculty for BASI, and it’s been such a privilege to travel globally and share the work of Joseph Pilates and cultivate relationships with wonderful people.

The opportunity to share my enthusiasm for Pilates and how it relates to walking/running on the Pilates Anytime platform is something I am very grateful for, as it has allowed me to share my thoughts, ideas, and practical classes via videos. As I continue to hone a program directed towards those of us approaching or in the midst of our middle (and in many ways best!) years, I share the tools of Pilates, release modalities, Neurokinetic Therapy as well as wellness coaching...and especially enjoy doing so on retreats to beautiful places!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Knowing I am impacting lives in a way that encourages contemplation of purpose and passion, all the while redefining the meaning of wellness of body, mind, and spirit, is something I do not take lightly...we have but one precious life in this broken world. We should choose well where we put our focus. “If you fight for your limitations, you get to keep them.”

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

A challenge I face as a small business owner is the ability (or lack thereof) to compartmentalize work and downtime. The “off” switch can be difficult to find at times. Having a grounding practice of breathing, meditation, reading, and journaling before the day begins is a must for me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

I would say a clearly delineated plan, broken down into long-term, monthly, weekly, and then daily must-do’s to stay on top of priorities is instrumental, as well as prioritizing priorities. Leaning into resources and mentors will save you from many unnecessary mistakes...as well as spur creativity. Always be a student, surrounding yourself with people smarter than yourself. Take time to know who you are and what you stand for, and nourish that daily.
