Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Maha Al Musa, Founder & CEO of EmbodyBirth, located in Brisbane, QL, Australia.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business of 26 years is a sacred birth education platform designed for both pregnant women and birth care providers. My audience is those who are trying to conceive, pregnant, birthing, and mothers, as well as all birth support persons, whether doula, midwife, Dr, or family member.

Tell us about yourself

I am an award-winning international, independent childbirth educator as the founder of EmbodyBirth and BellydanceBirth since 1997. I am of Palestinian/Lebanese origin and was raised in Australia. I am a birth doula, educator, and mentor. I am internationally renowned and independent. My motivations are because I understand that the power of sacred birth practice lives the key to raising human consciousness, and this embodied inspiration keeps me teaching, sharing, and offering my award-winning resources - book, video series, birth preparation program, and online EmbodyBirth educator certification training. When we understand that birth that values mothers and babies at the centre of the experience will change the trajectory of humanity from coercive, controlling, fearful, and separated to loving, compassionate, connected, and kind, we will wake up to our greatest potential for Love.

I was also the woman who stood up from 2012-2016 in the worldwide media advocating for public and natural term breastfeeding. My 3rd child, my daughter, was born at home when I was 46 years of age and breastfed/nurtured for 8.5 years. My 3 children motivate me every day to be responsible for creating a better world!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have traveled to many countries and taught mine in person EmbodyBirth program. My greatest accomplishment is touching the hearts of women, babies, and birth support care providers by bringing warmth and love into the birth room and people's hearts. To teach my sacred knowing and embodied understanding is a gift, first and foremost, beyond any money.

Receiving awards for my world's first book on BellydanceBirth, entitled Dance Of The Womb, has been a great achievement, as well as speaking as a keynote at the Shandong midwifery conference to 2000 midwives. To stand in my unwavering truth as an independent voice without being controlled by any system is a great accomplishment as I approach 3 decades of birth work. Never giving up, even in the face of adversity, is a wonderful stance. To be proud of my achievements on a human heart level is important to me.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing as a woman in a business that is not generally valued by society is staying consistent, true to my truth, and bringing in money consistently as this is more a rollercoaster rather than regular, not giving up and remembering the "why" I do what I do.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know why you are doing your business that lives outside of making money. Because if you don't make a profit, would your "why" keep you motivated to make the necessary changes and reformatting to continue?
  2. Seek short-term and long-term goals. Have a clear pathway for what's in the now and what's in the future.
  3. Trust your gut instincts. Don't be swayed by trends if you endeavour to remain in business for the long haul. Be courageous and creative.
