What's your business, and who are your customers?

Emerald Beauty - Makeup & Hair is a luxury mobile hair and makeup service. We specialize in airbrush foundation, and our style is a natural beauty. We travel to our clients to get them ready for their weddings or events. We pride ourselves on our customer service, giving our clients the best experience possible, and making them look fabulous.

Tell us about yourself

I have been in the hair and makeup industry for 15 years. From a young age, I had a passion for hair and makeup. I started my career in film and television and then changed to bridal and special events. I love working one on one with clients and making them feel amazing. I truly enjoy running my company and working so closely with clients.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment so far has been going full-time with my business. Previously I had some part-time jobs, but I have taken the leap to be 100% self-employed, and it has been amazing. The industry is unpredictable, and it takes a lot of hard work to build your brand up. I am so proud of what I have built, especially what I have accomplished in the last year.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Not giving up on your business, especially during the pandemic. Running your own business takes a lot of time and determination. Being self-employed and running my own company is truly what I was meant to do. Knowing that has really pushed me to make my business the best I can.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Learn everything you possibly can about business. Many people are great at what they do, but you need to know how to manage social media, website, bookkeeping, etc.
  2. Customer service. You are the face of your company when you're a small business, and people are hiring you. Show them your personality and give them a personalized experience they can't get from a large company.
  3. Be prepared to put the time in. It's not going to happen overnight, and you have to research and put the work in to get your name out there.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I am extremely excited that I am incorporating my company thing month. Another milestone to celebrate. My future plan for my business is to open a studio space that clients can also come to.
