What's your business, and who are your customers?

Founded in 2017 by my husband (James Fleming) and me, The Power Within is a leading motivational intelligence training and development provider. By leveraging cutting-edge research in neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and social psychology, we help individuals and organizations achieve their goals and reach their full potential. Our unique, bespoke approach has helped us grow our client list, team, products, and reputation. Our flagship offering, the Leading with Motivational Intelligence course, has been ranked as one of the top leadership development programs in the world for three consecutive years.

With ten full-time employees and a presence in Aberdeen and London, we deliver leadership and development training worldwide, including partnerships with colleges across Scotland and key stakeholders in the construction, energy, and oil and gas sectors. Our revenue has grown significantly in recent years and is expected to reach £800,000 in the current financial year. We continue to attract new business and build our reputation by embracing new working methods, expanding our services and products, and collaborating with partners worldwide.

Tell us about yourself

We started The Power Within to help individuals and businesses become more accountable, resilient, and prepared for tomorrow's challenges. We are deeply committed to our purpose of motivating and inspiring future leaders and strive to make real change that lasts. Our unique approach to developing peak-performing employees goes beyond traditional means of closing skill gaps. Instead, we focus on closing the underlying belief gaps that cause virtually every employee performance issue. Our motivational intelligence programs, mindset performance, and self-leadership development tools have been successfully modified and developed to meet the needs of almost every employee in a business. Our mission is to give leaders the tools and knowledge to achieve their full potential while increasing their self-confidence and self-belief through Motivational Intelligence. We strive to support today's businesses to become tomorrow's leaders. Our company values are aligned with this mission, which includes being courageous, never stopping learning, uncovering potential, and being yourself.

What motivates me each day is the satisfaction of knowing that we are making a difference in people's lives. Seeing our clients achieve their goals and reach their full potential is incredibly fulfilling, and it's what drives me to continue growing and improving our business. I am excited to see what the future holds for The Power Within and our impact on the business community.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As business owners, our most significant accomplishment is the growth and success of The Power Within. From a small startup founded by my husband and me in 2017, we had a dream and a vision of creating something bigger and better than what was not currently available. We wanted leadership development to be something that drives empathy and trust. We have been able to make that dream a reality by growing to become a leading provider of motivational intelligence training and development, with a team of ten full-time employees and a presence in Aberdeen and London. Most importantly, we have been able to make a real impact on the lives and businesses of our clients through our unique approach to motivational intelligence, which is our greatest accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the most demanding and challenging things that come with being a family business owner and starting from scratch is balancing the business's demands with the family's needs. When starting a business, much time and effort are required to get it off the ground and make it successful. This can often mean long hours, tight deadlines, and high-stress levels and can be challenging for family members who may not fully understand or support the business and can strain relationships. Additionally, as a family business, there may be a level of personal and emotional investment that can make difficult business decisions even harder. It can be difficult to separate personal and professional relationships, which may lead to conflicts or disagreements within the family. However, starting a family business also positively impacts our husband-and-wife relationship and partnership. We trust each other implicitly and bounce off each other's strengths and weaknesses. It has enabled us to create this success and grow as a value-driven family business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Starting a family-run business can be an exciting and rewarding endeavour, but it also comes with challenges. From defining roles and responsibilities to communicating effectively, there are many things to consider when starting and running a family-run business, and a strong mindset is one of them.

  1. Clearly define roles and responsibilities: When starting a family-run business, it's essential to clearly define the roles and responsibilities of each family member involved. This will help avoid confusion, overlap, or duplication of tasks and ensure everyone is working towards a common goal. By clearly defining roles and responsibilities, each family member will know what is expected and can work together more effectively.
  2. Communicate effectively: Communication is critical in any business, but it's essential in a family-run business. Regularly scheduled family meetings can help to keep everyone informed and on the same page. It's also important to establish open lines of communication where family members feel comfortable discussing any concerns they may have.
  3. Have a clear vision and set of values: A clear vision and set of values will help guide the family-run business and ensure everyone is working towards the same goals. It will also help keep the company focused on what's important, especially during times of stress or uncertainty. Having a clear vision and set of values
  4. It's also important to take time for yourself and your family: This is important for maintaining a healthy work-life balance and keeping a positive mindset and perspective on the business.
