Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cheryl Williams, owner of English With Cheryl, located in Montreal, QC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I teach English online. I offer private and group lessons to beginner, intermediate, and advanced-level English learners. My aim is to create an environment in which you feel inspired to take chances, express yourself, make mistakes, and become a better English speaker.

Tell us about yourself

Hi, I'm Cheryl, and I live in one of the most vibrant and artistic neighborhoods in Montreal, Canada. I'm a native English speaker who loves to dance, write, teach, learn, laugh, and engage in real conversation. I have a degree in Communication Studies, two TESL certifications, and almost twenty years of experience as a professional communicator in business, artistic and academic settings. Teaching English allows me to share not only my knowledge of the language but also how to present one's ideas in a clear and precise manner.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been to step away from working for others and developing my own clientele, people with whom I genuinely enjoy sharing time and ideas.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As an independent worker, I wear many hats. I do all the promotion, website upkeep, emailing, accounting, IT, program design, and teaching!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just start. Start small. Start before you feel "ready" - just start.
  2. Be willing to forgo some other luxuries and time you spend doing other things when you start.
  3. Do something you genuinely enjoy so that none of it feels like a sacrifice. You are investing in YOU!
