Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Erik Swanson, owner, and CEO of The Log Candle Company, located in Brighton, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Log Candle is a long-lasting tendable tabletop torch that brings the ambiance and fun interactivity of a campfire to your outdoor table or porch. Using upcycled wood and wax, our customers are fire-lovers who enjoy natural materials and a comfortable atmosphere.

Tell us about yourself

I've always been the creative type. Having a degree in Graphic Design and usually a hobby of working with wood (whittling, building), and of course a love of campfires, it should have seemed obvious, but it was a failed birdhouse that led to the invention of The Log Candle. I really enjoy working with my hands and creating something that people genuinely enjoy. People's enthusiasm has really kept me motivated and keeps me trying to keep improving and growing.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment so far has been being able to buy a place to expand production. But the most satisfying has been to be able to hire workers to help me make the Log Candles.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The most difficult thing is trying to keep in mind all of the things that need to be done and prioritize them constantly... I need to make more lists.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't be afraid of or insulted by feedback if someone has a suggestion; that usually means they like the product and want to help it succeed.
  2. Don't be afraid to take a leap. I wasn't quite prepared for a month-and-a-half long market; it was very expensive and a marathon of work, but it is the only reason I could expand today.
  3. Stay on top of customer service and be communicative with customers (especially if there is a problem); people are very understanding if given the information in a timely fashion.
