Choose Your Healthy - Erin Decker Nutrition

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and nutrition but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Erin Decker, Owner of Erin Decker Nutrition, located in Raleigh, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a nutrition consulting and counseling business where I work one-on-one with clients to help them improve their relationship with food. My clients include those who struggle with eating disorders/disordered eating, as well as anyone who is tired of dieting and stressing about food and just looking to shift the focus off of food.

Tell us about yourself

I have a broad background as a dietitian, and I have worked with all types of clients before settling into my current niche. I struggled with my own relationship with food in the past and found I was always drawn to the intuitive eating and Health at Every Size philosophies. Once I started working with clients in this space, there was no turning back. It felt like what I was meant to do. I care deeply about my clients because I know how they feel. Starting my own business allowed me to set my own hours and boundaries so that I could show up 100% for my clients.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is simply taking the risk to start my business! I am grateful every day that I am able to work with my ideal client on my own schedule while also contributing financially to my household.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing for me is being ok with imperfection. I consider myself a recovering perfectionist. There are so many things you want to do as a business owner, and I need to constantly remind myself of the cliche that "done is better than perfect!"

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My top three tips include:

  1. Get in touch with your values. It is a lot easier to make business decisions when you know what is important to you and your business.
  2. Set short and long-term goals, but know that they can change. Focus on projects that align with your goals, so you're not wasting time. However, it is not worth hyper-focusing here because you can change your goals ANYTIME you want!
  3. Know that there will be ups and downs. I have slow months and busy months. I have clients that I have seen for years and others who ghost me after one session. It's the nature of the work that I do, and I'm still working on accepting it!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Practice listening to and trusting your intuition. I always want to know what the "right" move is, and unfortunately, it is never that clear! But your intuition is a lot smarter than you think. It has never steered me wrong.
