Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Scott Bear, Photographer & Digital Artist at Etilogix Photography, based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a photographer. I blend photography images, both realism and abstract. My aim is to bring about a unique perspective of art through photography using natural landscapes, animals, and portraits through an Indigenous perspective using Cree myths and oral literature. Fine art prints for decorating interior spaces and clothing brands with unique Cree art based on folklore and distinct in color, black & white, infrared, cinematic, surrealism, and abstract. High-contrast images and portraits. All unique themed art for the art lover.

Tell us about yourself

My artistic endeavours started when I received my first camera as a gift which was the 60 D Canon with a standard zoom lens. Years of experimentation with the camera on the dials, modes, and software motivated me to navigate further into different genres of photographic art. Post-secondary education in film and Theatre and history in Greek classics, pre, and post-war studies further interested me. It was all these experiences that intrigued me. Now photography was the starting point which then led to the digital frontier of creating conceptual work exploring themes on psychology, the shadow, and how that may take form. Navigating through these multi-layered themes and categories gives me a sense of purpose and direction.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say believing in yourself and having confidence in what you are doing with your work.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Clientele, market, target audience, and financing are all part of the equation. Now on the opposite side, find what works for you. Not in terms of ok, got it next. You want to make lasting connections with your client base. It is difficult as I am starting out and have recently put things into motion. However, that is what makes it interesting is the challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Write a business plan and stick with it with slight modifications to adapt as needed.
  2. It will take time. Successful businesses do not just start from the top down; pace yourself.
  3. Be unique in your own way as an artist, as a photographer, as a business owner, and as an entrepreneur.
