Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in financial services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Daniel Evans, Founder and CEO of Evans & Company, located in Garden City, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a financial wellness firm helping entrepreneurs, CEOs, and high-performing executives make their biggest financial decisions in life and business.

Tell us about yourself

I was at Merrill Lynch when my biggest client needed help with day-to-day financial decisions in his household and business, in addition to wealth management. It's called a family office service. It was an offer I couldn't refuse and the chance to start my own company.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I was very fortunate to have a career in finance from the beginning, from venture capital to investment banking and corporate finance. I didn't get to utilize the full spectra of my background at a large wealth management firm. Doing it as my own company has made me unique in the advice I give. I think that's something I'm proud of, and it fits well with the knowledge base of the clients I work with.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There are up and down years. Up years feel like you're on top of the world. Down years feel like the end of the world. It has been good for a while, but with so much technological disruption in our business, adapting at the same pace as potential clients have been challenging. But we keep moving forward.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Set a goal. How much money do you need to live comfortably? That's the number of sales you need for your product or service.
  2. How much product or service do you need to sell to get there? This should be your only goal.
  3. Don't quit your day job. You'd be surprised how many people quit their jobs to start. That job, through your salary, is how you will fund your business. If you have a passion you want to turn into a business, putting yourself in a bad financial situation will turn that endless energy into anxiety. Be patient; timing is everything.
