Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michele Costopulos Cappi, creator of Excel con Mike, located in London, England, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I work in the space of online education. I share micro tips about how to use Excel on social media channels. Then I offer high-end structured online courses to help people embark on the journey of learning excel. My audience & customers are every one that, on a daily basis, works with Excel and wants to learn better how to use this instrument.

Tell us about yourself

Funny enough, I built my knowledge of Excel during an internship I was rejected for. I realized how the knowledge built during those months could be used to build something special: specifically, to teach Excel in a different way versus traditional teaching methods. I'm motivated by seeing how my students progress in their professional life, and thanks to the knowledge of the tool, they are able to get jobs, promotions, or increase in salary.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The fact I now trained more than 10K students with my Excel Academy. As a consequence, it makes me proud that this allowed me to generate value for the broader ecosystem, employ people and deliver a high-quality service to my students.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The fact that you have to set your own agenda. You have to decide your priorities and what's better for the business. There's no roadmap or previous knowledge, and not always asking for advice is useful. You need to make decisions fast enough and decide where you want to concentrate your resources and time.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start. Better done than perfect. The focusing on improving details that make a difference.
  2. Failing is a prerequisite. Before launching this successful business, I failed several times, but each time taught me something new.
  3. No alibi. Always assume responsibility. Finding excuses about why something didn't go the way you wanted is never a good strategy. Start by acknowledging that your areas of control and influence are bigger than you think.
