What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a pediatric occupational therapist who has been working with children in Palm Beach County for more than 20 years. I have worked with kids with a wide range of diagnoses, such as Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and genetic disorders, as well as milder problems, such as handwriting issues.

Of course, as an OT, I can't forget to mention the many kids I work with who struggle with dysregulation and sensory processing deficits. As an occupational therapist (OT), I focus on fine motor skills, dressing and feeding skills, and sensory seeking and avoidance behaviors. I work with kids from birth to late teens.

Tell us about yourself

I am an occupational therapist and mother who recently became an empty nester in need of new pursuits. I found myself with the opportunity to transition from being an in-home therapist to an in-office therapist. It was a way to grow my business in new ways. Having an office allows me to offer my services to a wider range of kids and reach more areas. It was great timing for me to try something new that expanded my ability to serve kids in our community.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is all the families that I am able to help. Occupational therapy changes people's lives. I still remember the day I decided to become an OT. The career description of helping people achieve as much independence as possible captured my heart. I realized that I could help people lead more independent and functional lives. That is why I do what I do.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Overcoming uncertainty and doubt is the hardest thing about being a business owner for me. I am a trained therapist but have had to learn the business part from the ground up. That can be challenging because I don't have a marketing background. I don't know how to write a business plan.

I mean, I am a therapist! So learning how to start and grow a business, which I am still doing, has been the hardest part. The challenge has been recognizing everything I don't know about running a business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. I would encourage anyone who dreams of having their own business to go for it. I have been able to be successful due to the many people who have been supportive along the way. So, I would say find a mentor or someone with experience in your area of interest.
  2. Start slow and grow. It has been an evolution for me. I started doing my private practice part-time, transitioned to full-time, and now have a brick-and-mortar location.
  3. I took it at the right pace for my family and me. It doesn't have to happen overnight.
