Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Christina Evans and Sasha Dylan Bell, Founders of Fairy School, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Fairy School is a course for kids to transform into a fairy at home! It sparks their creativity and connection to nature through fun, fairy-themed activities. What makes it unique is the structured journey we take kids on, where, by the end, they are certified fairies. Our customers are parents all over the world looking to keep their kids engaged and active, with all the planning done for them. And yes, it’s as adorable as it sounds.

Tell us about yourself

With over 15 years of experience in childcare, as well as garnering prestigious awards as an environmental artist – including spending time in Antarctica with scientists – Christina has performed and created worldwide, including throughout the USA, Europe, and Asia. Sasha is an Emmy Award-nominated filmmaker who, over the past 20 years, has worked for dozens of film studios & television networks, including Warner Bros., Netflix, and MTV.

Together we’ve collaborated creatively for almost 20 years, culminating in the perfect hybrid of all our experience in Fairy School. Our mission is to connect kids to nature and boost their self-esteem in a way that is fun, creative, and easy for parents.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Just getting started. We often joke that had we known how much work was going to be involved on a daily basis, it might have scared us off starting in the first place. Honestly, though, we couldn’t be happier for our ignorance in the beginning. It has allowed us to push through, grow enormously and build something we’re both not just proud of but excited about daily.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I would say the periods of often constantly living outside our comfort zones. There are times of confusion, self-doubt, and even a lack of understanding from those closest to you. At times it can be a marathon of discomfort. We’ve learned that’s just part of the process. Thankfully as a married team, we’re there to support each other through these times.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Believe that your business is unique enough to set apart from everybody else, just by the mere fact that it is you who is doing it.
  2. Dive in head-first. You’ll likely feel like you’re a fraud or you don’t know what you’re doing sometimes (we do daily!), but in time you and your business will evolve and grow.
  3. Remember that fear and doubt are part of the journey. As long as they aren’t in the driver’s seat, it’s not just ok to feel it, but an important part of the road to get there.
