Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Fay Poirier, Founder of Fefay, located in Cookshire-Eaton, QC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Fefay is a fashion and decorative accessories shop. My customers are mostly women of all ages. They can find many accessories for winter as scarves, beanies, and headbands, but also home accessories, like a cushion and dishcloth, and clothes that are all made in Québec.

Tell us about yourself

I always felt the need to get my own business. My grandpa and my dad were both businessmen, so the apple did not fall far from the tree! I started my first business, a photography studio, when I was 21 years old. Then, at 29, I opened my first small shop, which I still have, where I restore and build wood furniture. It was at 31 years old that I began with Fefay. This business started when we bought a batch of clothes made from my great aunt’s art. Then, with the intention of keeping me busy, I started to sew, and I realized that my work attracted people, so I decided to sell them. Meanwhile, I began to knit because I wanted to decrease my anxiety and keep my hands busy. This led me to discover a new passion and a new skill!

For me, it’s not hard to get motivated because creation is necessary for my sanity, and when I feel the need to get some time for myself, I create. I consider these moments as therapy; it calms me and makes me feel good.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When customers come back! Preparing a second, third, or even a fourth order for the same person makes me more than happy! It proves that my products are loved. I also love seeing people wearing my creations. It’s crazy to realize that what I do with my hands in my small room is proudly worn by someone I don’t even know!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The criticism. It’s normal to get some, and it comes with everything, but it’s hard for me to accept a bad review without explanation. I need to know the problem so I can get better. The accounting part too! I will not deny it; it’s my pet peeve! It’s mandatory but so painful! haha!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Don’t look for a business idea. Build a business that represents you that shows your values and your passions. The success will not be made overnight, just like Rome was not made in one day! Be prepared to work hard and get out of your comfort zone. Above all, don’t hesitate to give the right price on your product or service. Your work deserves to be paid.
