What's your business, and who are your customers?

Flow Fluently is a movement and dance school that helps individuals and partners feel and look their best as they develop freedom with their movement and music. Students describe Flow as "liberating" and an uninhibited approach to learning. In a nutshell, each person and couple discover their style and ability to feel good moving and flowing freely when dancing.

Our students are singles and couples excited to move well and learn to dance. We teach families, singles, and couples of all ages. Wedding couples are popular clients.

Tell us about yourself

In 2011, I had the fortunate opportunity to train as a ballroom dance instructor and realize what physical communication could be and the possible feelings that came with it. As dancing became a passion, I found it too programmed and style specific.

It took too much time and effort to feel good. So rather than copy someone else's movements and styles, I decided to create a way for everyone to create their own. I knew that by building some core principles, I could teach others to do the same. It became clear that my purpose was to bring these principles down to a logical method to help everyone realize their best selves on the dance floor.

Therefore Flow Fluently started to manifest this vision. Since 2017, I have been committed to discovering, organizing, and sharing this natural physical language and the powers it brings - to help us all feel a physical flow and evolve into a more connected version of humanity, and most significantly, to love our dancing. This keeps me motivated every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Turning my studio into a profitable venture within six months of its opening with only my word and vision to market to the public was my greatest accomplishment. With each new student, I needed to teach and articulate this new language through trial and error while ensuring their delight with their experience and results. It took four years to solidify the course to have proof of its positive results.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a business owner, there is always something new to learn with creating originality. What I do find challenging is keeping balance in my life and dissipating the fear of uncertainty. Fear of failure can be motivating, but I usually prefer to use excitement for success instead because I find more joy in the journey of realizing the vision.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start the business out of love, and then the "work" isn't ever "work."
  2. Create a business structure and product/service that feeds you, your employees, and your customer's positive energy. If you conduct yourself as an open book and everyone involved in the business is fed productive energy, the business can be supported and grow naturally.
  3. Starting a business is like having a baby. The baby comes first until it can take care of itself, a commitment you must be ready and excited for.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Flow Fluently has recently pivoted from a physical studio in Seattle into an online virtual school. The Discovery course is set to release in Nov 2022, which I am beyond the moon excited for.
