Reach Your Highest Fitness Potential - Fly Fitness

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Morgan Mattison, COO of Fly Fitness, located in Lincoln, NE, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Fly Fitness is a luxury, class-based fitness concept that combines effective, research-based workouts with an empowering and uplifting community for your best physical and mental wellness.

Tell us about yourself

I first joined Fly as a member, attending classes while working at a marketing agency. I found a connection to Fly that I'd never felt in a gym before and started working my way into the business. I began helping with strategy and marketing campaigns, transitioned to managing their flagship studio, and helped grow the concept to four operating studios and actively franchising. I feel so inspired by this business because everything we do at Fly goes beyond numbers or providing a service - we are deeply connecting to and empowering our community, making an impact every time we list and respond.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The best accomplishment would be deciding on a future and a vision and executing that. We decided several years ago that we wanted to bring Fly beyond the corner of our flagship studio and have made that vision a reality. It is so rewarding to create something that makes space for others and allows their talents to shine and grow.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The most challenging aspect of running a business is scaling it. You have to shift your mindset from a singular focus on maximizing the operations of a location to start adding in new locations, training and mentoring for future roles, and finding new strengths and weaknesses in yourself as your role in the company changes to respond to what it needs to grow.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Never be so set in your ways that you can't try a new way of doing things or learn from others.
  2. Identify the purpose of your business existing beyond making money. If you are true to that purpose and execute it as passionately as possible, often, the business grows with you.
  3. You will never outwork your to-do list - hone your skills in prioritization and make sure you're bringing up team members with you so they can grow into roles you previously held.
